We are proud to be vocal about the importance of heritage conservation / historic preservation. We work with local municipal leaders and elected officials to help drive formal preservation efforts in local communities.
We also provide historic tax credit training to historic preservation commissions and business leaders to encourage adaptive reuse efforts.
We provide practical advice and expertise regarding the more hands-on elements of historic building rehabilitation and restoration. Whether you have a question about wood sash window repair, historical mortar composition or the appropriate materials to use for your project, we can help you find an appropriate solution. We also work with a variety of tradesmen and women in the southeast region who specialize in historic buildings.
For years, the curation of historic buildings and old places has fallen under the umbrella of "historic preservation." Unfortunately, this terminology infers a focus on the past and a desire to "fix" places in time. At Paragon Heritage, we believe that our practice should be focused on the future, driven by the communities who occupy a place today, and stewarded for future generations. As such, we prefer the use of the term "heritage conservation" to describe our work. This broader approach allows the intangible aspects and values of a place to be centered where needed, and helps de-emphasize the dominance of the built environment in our work.
We believe that heritage conservation efforts should be driven by the communities that occupy or claim a place. Placing people at the heart of our work allows us to better represent the myriad diverse narratives that make up the full American story. Centering the perspectives, experiences and meanings most valued by the local community provides an opportunity to foreground the intangible elements of a place's heritage that are often overlooked by a purely building-centric approach.
A heritage conservation strategy seeks to reconcile a place's past with its future, while simultaneously leveraging it as a force for good in the present day. Poised at the intersection of architecture and equity, it offers numerous strategies to address modern day social issues. From providing solutions to the affordable housing crisis and boosting local economies, to preventing predatory gentrification and helping revitalize downtown areas, heritage conservation seeks to create modern, sustainable communities while safeguarding the foundations upon which they are built.
